This duplex project focused on the design of a large deck for two households. Both families, who enjoy spending their time outdoors, wanted the deck to function as an extension of their indoor spaces.

 

The deck was designed to allow for functions like outdoor dining, storage, and larger family gatherings. Safety, accessibility, and privacy were also determining factors in the overall design. A new large staircase connects the existing rooftop deck to the backyard, while providing separation by using a privacy screen underneath the staircase.

The site was regraded to keep the deck below the guardrail requirement elevation at all times, thereby successfully eliminating the need for guardrails.
